  1. Chiles decided not to run for reelection to the US Senate in 1988 but re-entered politics by winning the 1990 race for Governor. Governor Chiles was reelected in 1994 and served until his death in 1998, just three weeks prior to the end of his term. It’s also important to point out that Chiles limited his campaign contributions to $100 and refused to take PAC money, both unheard of in modern politics.
